Campground Classroom

A brand new outdoor classroom and garden is now up and running at Campground Visitor and Education Centre at Wrekenton.

Launched by South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership together with SUEZ nad Groundwork NE and Cumbria, it aims to educate young people, their families and others about the different aspects of the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' message in a fun and practical way.

The classroom and garden includes:

  • raised beds for vegetables, plants and sensory herbs, and a pond

  • Three bespoke wooden benches created by local chainsaw artist Tommy Craggs

  • A greenhouse made from 1,000 reclaimed plastic bottles

Schools and community groups who would like to learn more about how to be more environmentally friendly and reduce waste are all welcome to come along and enjoy this new facility.

The South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership comprises three councils - Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland - who have joined forces to create a more effective way of managing household rubbish.
