Newcastle's Northumberland Street welcomed the new British Home Store to the city on September 2, 1932

Last year saw the demise of long-time hig-street favourite BHS.
In the North East, BHS had stores in the Metrocentre, Durham, South Shields, Sunderland, Middelsborough, Hartlepool and, of course, on Northumberland Street in Newcastle.
The first ever British Home Stores shop was opened in Brixton, London, in 1928 by a group of American entrepreneurs who hoped to emulate the success of Woolworth.
Four years later, the company opened its Newcastle store on September 2, 1932 - a year when the spectre of economic depression and unemployment stalked Britain and our region, but also a year when Newcastle United lifted the FA Cup.
Half a century later, it was Newcastle united's 1950s Cup legend Jackie Milburn who was on ahnd to officially re-open the revamped store in October, 1983.

Hundreds looked on as 59-year-old Wor Jackie arrived red-faced for the 9am opening, having run all the way from Gosforth to Northumberland Street after his car got caught up in a traffic jam!
