Organisers of one of the company's oldest road races say that it will still go ahead this year - despite the company behind it going bust.

Total Racing International Ltd, which runs the Morpeth to Newcastle Road Race, has gone into liquidation.

But with just two months to go before the event takes place, race organiser Phil Gray is confident it will still go ahead.

he said: "Due to reasons outside the control of the company the business has had to enter into the process of liquidation.

"We have been working tirelessly from the moment it became clear this was the only option to make sure all of the events staged by the business could carry on and grow in the future.

"As participants in the Spanish City Triathlon found and the participants in this weekend's Bamburgh Triathlon will also find, there has been no impact on the events or the quality of the events delivered."

Mr Gray said discussions are under way with another events company to take over running the Morpeth to Newcastle Road Race.

"They are due to confirm shortly whhether they will to take the event forward," he added.

"In the meantime anyone who has entered the race or looking to enter the race can be confident that their entry fees will not be at risk."

The Morpeth to Newcastle Road Race first took place in 1904 and has attracted Olympians and world record holders.

Last year, organisers intorduced a revamped route which includes the Northumberland and North Tyneside coastline and Newcastle's Quayside.

They also changed the date of the event from mid-summer to October, following the months of talks witn Northumberland County Council, North Tyneisde Council, Newcastle City Council and community groups.

This year's evet will take place on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29, and it includes a marathon from Morpeth to Newcastle, a half-marathon from North Tyneside to Newcastle and a cycling event.
