Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick in Newcastle to to help find homes for Abandoned pets

He is part of a Channel 4 programme which is to broadcast live from the Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in Benton in August

Newcastle is to be at the centre of a five-day TV campaign to find new homes for abandoned pets.

The Channel 4 programme is to be hosted by the Supervet himself, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, plus Tv presenters Kate Quinton and Steve Jones.

Animal Rescue Live: Supervet Special will be broadcast live from the Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in Benton for an hour over five weeknights from August 7 to 11.

The hopes is that all the shelter's many dogs, cats and rabbits will find new families who can give them the homes that they deserve - along with encouraging the nation at large to adospt rescue pets.

The aim is that this initiative will in turn highlight the animals available in many other rescue centres around the country, so that families considering a pet will find their local shelter and head in their direction.

Programme makers are now looking for potential pet adopters to view the animals available and anyone interested can bhook a slot before moving on to the adoption process.

Prof Fitzpatrick siad: "Though raising awareness of the fun, love and hope that rehoming an animal can bring to families everywhere, I genuinely think that we speak a language of joy and compassion, and I think that this is a fantastic message to put out into the world right now."

Steve said: "I love animals, I love TV and I love The Supervet. This is going to be a great show with a great purpose. I can't wait."

Shelter bosses believe the campaign provides a "fantastic opportunity" to re-home animals.

Chief executive Leyla Rutter said: "Rescue pets make the best pets, with individual characters and a lot of love to give.

"We are all so excited to see what the programme brings and can't wait for Noel, Steve and Kate to meet some of our amazing residents."

The shelter is committed to ensuring that all the animals are responsibly re-homed and go to loving and dedicated families.

The programme will also bring into sharp focus the fact that although Britain thinks of itself as a nation of animal lovers, with more than 16 million pets, every year around 250,000 domestic animals are abandoned to the care of rescue centres.

Anyone interested in seeing the animals can email animalrescueweek@blastfilms.co.uk or call 0191 266 1167 to book a time slot.
