Check out the Newcastle city centre junction branded as 'ridiculous'

Drivers are getting confused by the junction off the slip road on the A167 in Newcastle, one motorist claims

The city centre road junction has been branded "ridiculous" by one confused driver.

Thousands of motorists will be familiar with the slip road off the A167 in Newcastle, which is often used by legions of football fans heading towards St James' Park.

The slip road has three lanes, with the left veering off towards Grandstand Road and the right has recently been converted into a bus lane.

So here is where lies the problem?

Drivers using the middle lane can go straight ahead to rejoin the A167 or turn right at the traffic lights to go onto the A189.

But Sandi Rickerby said: "When you take the right turn, the road is immediately in two lanes and you are in the right hand lane.

"This is a turning right only lane and you go straight back onto the A167 north.

"You have to cross lanes to get into the left hand lane to go towards Barrack Road and town. Ridiculous."

Now while the junction may be second nature for the regulars, you can easily spot the first times users on the road.

After realising they are in the wrong lane, the panic sets in and they frantically try to change lanes before having to turn back onto the A167 north.

This junction is the latest in our series of confusing, irritating and irrational road layouts.
