Gateshead cake shop Scrumptious Desserts to bring new flavours to the North East

The cake shop is planning to sel Eastern European and Asian desserts after trialing them on customers

A local baker is planning on selling tradtional cakes from as far afield as Asia after relaunching his shop in Gateshead.

Scrumptious Desserts owner Laurentiu Ion

Scrumptious Desserts' owner Laurentiu Ion is planning to sell traditional Romanian and Asian cakes from his new shop on Old Durham Road.

The business sells a selection of cheesecakes, brownies, and ice cream sundaes, but Mr Ion wants to expand his range to include more unusual desserts.

Explaining his plans Mr Ion said: "I am originally from Romania and there are lots of different cakes we make there. One of the foreign desserts will be a Romanian dessert and I will make it and see how people react to it.

"If they like that I will start making Asian desserts as well."

Romanian cakes often use a similar sponge to cakes made in the UK, although more flavour is soaked into the sponge itself.

Before the new recipes go on sale Mr Ion will hand out free samples to customers to judge whether people liek the new desserts.

Mr Ion re-launched his bakery last week after moving it to a more prominent location on Old Durham Road. Scrumptious Desserts had previously beenbased on nearby Fullerton Place but had garned little attention because it was located in a side street.

However, the shop is now ideally placed in a busy area and Mr Ion hopes to attract business from the increased footfall as well as the two nearby schools.

Scrumptious Desserts is open from 10am to 10pm and for cakes lovers who still cannot get there in person the shop also delivers through the Just Eat website.

The business originally planned on opening until midnight each night but reduced its opening hours in order to create less noise for its neighbours.

Mr Ion is also in the process of opening a second cake shop in Ashington.

"It's pretty much going to be another Scrumptious Desserts," said Mr Ion. "But for the one in Ashington I managed to get a café licence so there will be seats inside for people to sit and eat the cakes."
