Bar Jalou worker accused of stealing £37,000 form Newcastle city centre nightspot

A bar worker is facing accusations that he stole more than £37,000 from his employers.

Mark Taylor was on the payroll of Bar Jalou, on Newcastle's Neville Street, when he is alleged to have pocketed the cash over a three-year period.

A court heard that the 34-year-old is accused of stealing the money by running 729 false refunds through the till between July 2012 and August 2015.

He is then also alleged to have deposited 323,000 of the cash into his own account.

During a hearing at the Newcastle Magistrate's Court on Friday, Taylor, of Colliery Road, in Dunston, Gateshead, faced one charge of theft by employee and one of concealing or disguising criminal property.

He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address and withhold his pleas to both offences.

Prosecutors said that the theft matter related to Taylor allegedly stealing 37,619.05 from Bar Jalou and the concealing or disguising criminal property offence was connected to the accusation he deposited £23,000 into his bank account.

Newcastle Magistrate's Court

The court was told, because of the alleged breach of trust, high amounts involved and length of time that the offences occurred, the case should be sent to Newcastle Crown Court.

Magistrates declined juridsdiction and Taylor was released on unconditional bail to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on July 21.
