Fundraisers pounded the pavements of Newcastle Gateshead Quayside in the blistering heat for the popular sponsored challenge.

Every penny from the event goes to The Chronicle Sunshine Fund's Go Bananas appeal, which supports children with disabilities and life limiting illnesses across the North East.

The 15th outing of the 5k fun run, sponsored by Intu Metrocentre and Intu Eldon Square, kicked off at 7pm on Wednesday as participants warmed up for the event.

Among the runners was Christine Flint, from Ryton whose nine-year-old daughter Niamh has been helped twice by the Sunshine Fund - with a specialist hydro bath and an all-terrain buggy.

Niamh has Rett sundrome - a rare genetic disorder that affects brain development, resulting in severe mental and physical disability.

Christine said: "The help from the Sunshine Fund has been fantastic for Niamh - the buggy means we can get out and about with her much more."

Runners, including teams of friends, family members and work colleagues, headed east along the Newcastle quayside path before doubling back and finishing in Baltic Square, after crossing the Mellennium Bridge.

Simon Tucker, operations manager at intu Metrocentre, said: "It's a great to be here because we're very passionate about the Sunshine Fund, and it's important to help these kids as much as we can."

Ros Sparrow, from Hay and Kilner Law Firm, said: "We have around 20 people running this year - we're delighted to be part of it."

Fundraising co-ordinator Rebecca Jama said: "Thank you so much so everyone who took part in the run, not only for giving their time an effort to run but also for raising their sponsorship money which will go to buy some of the equipment for the 10 children from our Go Bananas campaign.

"A huge thank you to the local Harriers who help to organise the run and supply all the marshalls on the night.

"Also to our volunteers who help co-ordinate the run and to Bodyzone for donating their tim to do our warm up this year. I would also like to say thanks both to intu Eldon Square ad Metrocentre who sponsored the event for the third year."

Clare Cannon, community manager intu North East said: "The Sunshine run is one of the fundraising highlights of the year which intu Eldon Square and intu Metrocentre are proud to sponsor for the third year in a row.

"The atmosphere, sense of teamwork and enthusiasm on the day is generated by the life-changing work done by The Sunshine Fund and staff from both shopping and leisure centres are always keen to be involved.

"This year a team of 20 runners from intu have signed up for the 5k run and they're working hard to raise vital funds to support children with disabilities and life-limiting illnesses across the North East."
