Organisers of the Newcastle West End Food Bank have been struggling to meet demand as they are getting around 800 people a week through their doors looking for urgent supplies.

And now they fear if there is not a big response to their appeal this week, they will have to ration the amount that they give out as they are expecting a big increase in demand with the summer holidays fast approaching.

Spokesperson Alesha Aljeffri said: "We're pretty desperate for food supplies which is why we have launched our appeal this week.

"We urgently need to build up our stocks up summer holidays. In a typical week we help 800 people but when the children are off that number goes up considerably."

Alesha said that they are looking in partiular for food stuffs like cereal, pasta and pasta sauce, UHT milk or powdered milk, sugar, fruit juice, tinned tomatoes, tinned vegetables as well as tinned meat and tuna.

Other staples they are looking for tea bags, instant coffee, biscuits, snack bars, tinned rice pudding, rice and tinned fruit.

Since it opened in 2013, the West End food bank in Benwell has given out an estimated £2m worth of food at a rate of £10,000 a week.

The director of 'I, Daniel Blake' Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty visited it and shot scenes in Venerable Bede church where food parcels are distributed. People who rely on the foodbank and volunteers who help run it featured as extras.
